How-to sync google with the Nokia C5

Hello, I've recently acquired a Nokia C5 (also called C5-00) mobile phone, which I consider a pretty sleek piece of equipment at a good price.

As I come from Android, a major problem I encountered was to get all my google information into the phone: google mail (gmail), google contacts, and of course google calendar. And, spoilt that I am, I want this over-the-air, OTA, without any kind of nokia software cluttering up my PC.

So, here's how:

Google Mail:

This one is easy. Simply go through the wizard in the phone. It has a dedicated GMAIL entry. In the process of this, you will have to entrust Nokia with your Gmail credentials. But that's a fair price considering you will have push email.

You can then login on https://email.nokia.com/ to select which gmail folders you would like to have synced.

The alternative would be to use the "Mail for Exchange", which many people suggest. I didn't get that to work well though. Error messages kept popping up. Save your time on this :-)

Google Contacts and Google calendar

That being said, we still do want to set up a "Mail for Exchange" connection to google to synchronize the contacts and calendar. Works both ways, OTA.

1. Follow these instructions (ignore the pics) http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=147951

EXCEPT: For domain, do not leave it empty, but use "gmail.com" instead. I've heard rumours that it wont work otherwise.

2. after you have set up this account, make sure it will only sync calendar and contacts, and not the mail.

For this, go to your "Menu", "Messages", select "Options", "Settings", "E-Mail", and tell it to not sync email via "Mail for Exchange", but sync calendar and contacts (tasks are not supported at all).

I trust that you will figure out the details.

3. It takes a little bit for the contacts to show up for the first time. I'm still playing with the synchronization intervals. But it works.

hope this helps,
Simon
